On the 1st April 2001, the crew found themselves at Tomaree Head for a days training in using the Larkin Frame. The day was sunny with a good nor easter already blowing and we were using an eighty metre face on the northern side. After making the required inspections, a suitable location was found and the frame erected.
After positioning the frame, it was time to set the backstay and lower a volunteer to the rocks below. A problem encountered was that it was not possible to have a straight pull on the hauling line and the backstay line was above the frame tension tube. Another problem found was the hard rock, it was difficult to drill holes for the hard surface plate locating pins. This took us some hours to accomplish.
With everyting set, the first descent was made and another problem exposed. With the angles of both the backstay line and the re-directed life line, the frame tended to lift under load. To overcome this, the edge controller and assistant stood on the hinge plates, as seen in the third picture. Another problem was the ineffective use of whistles with the nor easter blowing, we resorted to using radios from both appliances.
Despite the problems, a successful days training was achieved and valuable lessons learned. The crew appreciated the contribution made by the Rescue Section Trainer, who has since solved our hauling problems and is awaiting confirmation for his plan from the equipment supplier. The crew await the next training session.
