Nelson Bay is approximately sixty kilometres by road north east of Newcastle and is located on the southern shores of Port Stephens. The Port is open to the Pacific Ocean through Yacaaba and Tomaree Heads. The area is within three hours drive from Sydney and has ample accommodation for visitors. The area is a popular destination for tourists from both Australia and Overseas. Popular attractions in the area are watersports on Port Stephens and open beaches, dolphin watch cruises, whale watching cruises during the annual whale migrations.
The port was mentioned in Captain Cook's Endeavour Log as he sailed northwards along the east coast. The port is a safe water port with a deep channel running through the bay and was used by the Allies for training prior to the island landings during WW2.
The Nelson Bay Fire District includes all the areas of Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay, Corlette and parts of Salamander Bay. Primary Rescue is provided west to and including Bobs Farm.
