On 8th June 2003 at 0953Hrs, Nelson Bay pumper responded to a "House Alight" at Soldiers Point. Enroute information was received from Newcastle Communication Centre that a second property was under threat. The pumper was the first arriving appliance and found the structure fully engulfed and the single occupant safely out of harm. Two firefighters wearing SCBA commenced exposure protection and attack on the structure's western end. The first RFS tanker arrived some five minutes later and attacked the fire from the north eastern corner.
The fire was brought under control and remaing hot spots located and extinguished by crews using lines of 38mm hose. The cause of the fire was a heater which was accidently knocked over. The old fibro sheeted house was quickly engulfed in flames. Local Police and Ambulance crews also attended the scene.
It is a timely warning for people to take care with heating appliances during winter, the fact that no smoke alarms were fitted is also a concern.
